NALTREXONE PELLET FACTS

  • Naltrexone blocks the opioid receptors in the brain, resulting in decreased urges, rewards, and pleasure from using opioids, alcohol and eating disorder.

  • Naltrexone pellets MUST be used in conjunction with counselling and drug recovery programs.

  • Naltrexone pellets are inserted every 4 ½ to 5 ½ months as an in-office procedure.

  • Before the Naltrexone treatment you must be detoxed and opioid/alcohol free for a minimum of 7-14 days.

  • Naltrexone pellets may not work for everyone.

  • Naltrexone is not an opioid, addictive, or pleasure producing medication, therefore, it does not result in withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking it.

  • Naltrexone is not an alcohol/opioid substitute, so it will not extend your addiction to either.

  • An allergy test is performed prior to treatment.

  • Medical card to notify all medical personnel that you are on extended Naltrexone treatment, must be worn.

  • Naltrexone treatment may be contraindicated if you have liver/kidney conditions.

  • Make sure to tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and any medications or supplements you are taking.

VIVITROL VS. PELLETS

  • Vivitrol only lasts three to four weeks.

  • Naltrexone pellets last approximately 5 months.

  • Because Naltrexone pellets are administered every 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 months, this option is more cost-effective than Vivitrol.

  • Naltrexone pellets are less expensive over time.

  • Vivitrol shots hurt more.

  • Naltrexone pellet insertion is an office procedure and not a shot.
